Supertramp Scored Gold with ‘Crime of the Century’
Supertramp, the popular progressive rock band, continues to sale album after album featuring their classic lineup, 'Crime of the Century.' The album featured co-producer Ken Scott. Scott previously had worked with such names as The Beatles and David Bowie. 'Crime of the Century' was recorded at several different studios including the Mobile Fidelity (MFSL), Ramport Studios, in London, owned by the group known as 'The Who.'
The album was released by Supertramp in 1974. It still is one of the favored albums around the world. The group also plays a number of the songs, from the album, during their live concerts. Such staples as 'School,' 'Bloody Well Right,' 'Rudy' and others are favorites of the fans.
'Crime of the Century' is particularly significant in the United States because it brought about Supertramp's first U.S. Top 40 album. Following the release of 'Even in the Quietest Moments,' the album was certified as gold in the U.S. Another song from 'Crime of the Century,' Hide in Your Shell,' is considered as one of the best unknown gems in progressive rock music.
Supertramp's album went gold in the U.S. after listeners started appreciating innovations such as the harmonica introduction of 'School,' to the fade out of the title track. It is considered a work of art. The 'Crime of the Century' album is definitely full of catchy songs. Aside from being one of Supertramp's most progressive albums many of the songs have complex structures while still keeping their strong melodies. Listeners need to to listen and appreciate the strength of the melodies; at first some people only hear a very superficial level and think of the music as simple pop. However, after people started listening a little closer, and appreciating the enormous variety and creativity in the album this is another reason the album went gold in the U.S. The album also was noted by the authors of '1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.' They named it as one of the albums that everyone needs to hear.
Supertramp, the British progressive roch band, has toured the world. Their most memorable tours took place between the years of 1969 to 1988 and 1996 to 2002. They have recorded for A&M, Silver Cab, EMI, and BMG. They made a big name for themselves not only in the U.S. but they also reached superstardom in Canada, most of Europe, South Africa, Australia, and Brazil. They were one of the first groups signed to A&M records. Their first album, 'Supertramp,' was released in 1970 in the UK and Canada. Seven years later it was released in the U.S.
