However, because of the album’s lack of color graphics or text on the cover of the album, this album is more commonly known at The White Album. By the time The White Album was released, the Beatles were already worldwide celebrities, so they were able to release The White Album in their own record label, Apple.
Many of the songs for The Beatles were written while the band members were visiting the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi in India. The band went to the Maharishi to take part in sessions of long periods of meditation, but John Lennon and Paul McCartney were able to write out almost forty new songs. Lennon actually felt that he wrote some of his best songs while during this time period in Rishikesh. The songs on the white album were significantly more edgy that many of their previous works and changed how band approach music forever.

The recording sessions for The Beatles, which took place at Abby Road Studios and some at Trident Studios, were oftentimes strained between the band members because they were also busy with their new multimedia corporation, Apple Corps. Because of the growing tension, there was many times the band members would record in separate studios from each other for long periods of time. Some members of the production staff actually left the group because of the conduct of the band members, but the biggest snag in the production of The Beatles came when long time band member, Ringo Starr left. He was frustrated with what he felt was his small role in the group, and it took two weeks of persuasion from the other three band members before Starr would agree to return. This why on a few of the songs on the album the drums were played by one of the other members other than the normal Ringo Starr. After the production on The Beatles album, John Lennon and George Harrison both left the group for a short period of time, but the group did not finally disband until Paul McCartney publicly left in 1970, just two years after The Beatles was released.

The success of The Beatles was less than was expected because of their previous album, Spt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band that spent more than two hundred weeks on the UK charts. Although The Beatles debuted at number one on the UK charts, it was a disappointment because it was only on the UK for a total of twenty-four weeks. However, in the United States, The Beatles was meet with huge success. It debuted at number eleven and eventually made it to number one on the Billboard 200 list and stayed on top for nine weeks. The Beatles would eventually stay on the Billboard 200 chart for one hundred fifty-five weeks and would be the best selling Beatles album in the United States.
