The original 5 consisted of Stuart Sutcliff, John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Pete Best. They traveled among Hamberg and Liverpool building their reputation in clubs. Sutcliff later dropped out and Best was replaced by Ringo Starr. John Lennon sang vocals and played the guitar. Paul McCartney played bass guitar and sang vocals. George Harrison , the youngest member was fourteen when he joined the group. He played the lead guitar and also sang vocals. The fourth player, Ringo Starr sang vocals and played the drums. Later they would be recognized as the most acclaimed rock bands of all time, The Beatles.

The group sang many genres of music and brought a huge interest to British music. Eventually this brought about American debuts, later referred to as "The British Invasion". Their influence became well known for progressive ideas of social and culture. John Lennon took classes at the School of Arts and met a fellow classmate Brian Epston. He owned a music store and offered to manage the group. George Martin came aboard as their producer. Under the direction of George Martin they produced their first recording at Abbey Road Studios in London. In 1962 they became a well known name in the UK with the big hit single "Love Me Do". They followed with popular songs "Please Please Me"release date 1963, "From Me to You", "She Loves You" and the single sensation "I Wanna Hold Your Hand".

On February 9, The Beatles made their first US live television performance on the Ed Sullivan Show which was viewed by over 74 million people. A few days later was their first live US concert at Washington Colesium followed by a second concert at Carnegie Hall. In later years this adoration for the group The Beatles became referred to as "Beatlemania".

The group toured together until 1966, from 1966 until 1970 they spent most of their time in the studio recording. The group split in 1970 as each of the members found individual success. George Harrison died in 2001 from cancer. John Lennon was shot and killed in 1980 and McCartney and Starr remain active still today in the music industry.
