While the album that put U2 on the map, WAR is a recording that is full of messages that protest the atrocities of the Northern Ireland conflict.  Sunday Bloody Sunday is a song that was written in direct protest of the war in northern Ireland.  Edited from the original recordings this song previously opened with comments about the rights of the IRA.

U2 War debuted February 28, 1983.  The recording went straight to the top of the UK charts and became U2's first #1 album when it suplanted Michael Jacksons Thriller on the top of the charts.  New Years Day became the bands first to reach the top ten hit on the billboard charts and top 100 of the hot billboard charts.
